The introduction of an autonomous vehicle creates an increased operating time. Since manned vehicles are bound to many factors (mainly cost and work schedule) which limits their deployment time. The AGC however can operate at any time at any day and only needs to return to base for emptying, recharging and maintenance. This creates many opportunities for new forms of use.

challenge

Today the taiwanese citizen have to bring their trash to the garbage trucks which are stopping at distinctive collection spots multiple times a day and play an iconic music to notify the residents of their arrival. The big garbage trucks are accompanied by smaller recycling trucks with a service person that helps the citizens to sort their trash into 13 different categories.

Our concept is an upgrade to the current system of garbage disposal in Taipei. In the current state the garbage truck service is accompanied by an outdated website and various 3rd party apps of questionable quality. The first part of the upgrade keeps the garbage truck service as it is but connects the trucks in realtime to a new digital service. This service allows the citizens to get up-to-date information on the location, route and schedule of the garbage trucks. This will help users of both Group A and Group B to avoid unnecessary wait times and help them to plan of their disposal accordingly.
The second part of the upgrade introduces a new feature: the AGC (Autonomous Garbage Collector). The AGC is a small and fully autonomous garbage container that will operate within the gap the current garbage truck service leaves. The AGC uses an advanced algorithm to determine a flexible route that adapts to the need of the users. The users access the service by using the new app that displays location, route and status of the AGCs. Users can either use pre-planned pickup-spots along its route or request a new pickup-spot in their area.

The first part of our project was to do an online survey, interviews and behavior observations.  The research data we gained shows that while many people are content or with the status quo there are also many users that think of the service as inconvenient.
